Vatican City (Monday, 12/22/2014, Gaudium Press) Popes Francis has appointed French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran as the new Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. On the same occasion Archbishop Giampiero Gloder was appointed as the Roman Catholic Church’s Vice-Camerlengo.
The nomination was announced last Saturday, December 20.
Cardinal Tauran serves as president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and Msgr. Gloder serves as president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.
Among the activities to be performed by the Cardinal Camerlengo is to do the formal announcement of the death of the Pope. In this case, until the Pope’s successor is chosen, it will be up to Cardinal Tauran to serve as Head of State on an interim basis.
This Cardinal, as Proto-Deacon, was the one designated to announce to the world, from the central balcony of St. Peter’s, on March 13, 2013, the choice of Pope Francis using the traditional formula of the “Habemus Papam!”. (LMI)
